The Wooden Flowers project is a collaboration between Michal Menert and Adam Tenenbaum, which blossomed while they worked together on the Dead & Company tour co-producing and doing sound design as the creative team for Mickey Hart of The Grateful Dead. These two very talented artists began to work together on more experimental music and wanted an outlet to showcase this different sound. This album began in Northern California, as a series of experimental improvisation sessions consisting of heavily effected guitars, touchscreen forays, live instruments and no expectations or restrictions. They took several months sculpting these sessions into the ‘Gold Trails’ album coming out on Gravitas Recordings July 19th. Michal Menert has his hand in countless projects and collaborations, a true testament to his artistic mind and amazing creativity spanning all genres and styles. Adam, as Giant Metal Crickets, creates abstract sonic explorations, and has lent his unique guitar and production to members of Dead & Co, various artists, albums and film work. This upcoming album is truly a journey through all their art, and these collaborations are always something from another planet.
“Goldtrails is a psychedelic, sonic adventure, traversing a range of colors, emotions and grooves. Containing beats, bass glitches, four on the floor dance floor fillers, IDM granular sound design, and painted over with lots of twang, exotic melodies and textures.” – Wooden Flowers
‘Goldtrails’ opens up the album with a catchy guitar riff and a glitchy and melodic atmosphere of ear candy. It builds into an experimental drop of old school bass sound design while still keeping the melodies of the hook for a wild ride. ‘The Stranger’ opens with classic sampling and an old school western atmosphere, teasing heavier sound design and more modern electronic elements before dropping into an experimental blend of electro bass. ‘Sky River’ pulls back and offers a very chill and lo-fi beat with lush guitar melodies floating through the ears, a perfect track to sit back and relax to. ‘Dragon Flower’ continues the beautiful laid back style, while adding a downtempo house feel to bring up the energy. Full of experimental synths and new ideas, this track is a psychedelic journey through the past. ‘Iridescence’ is a perfect feel good ride through guitar and synths that can cheer up anyone, a drum switch up half-way through gives it some more energy and teases a more danceable house groove. ‘Cosmic Rider’ takes this groove and flips into a four on the floor epic journey that feels like an old western soundtrack mashed with a melodic techno groove. ‘Ghostly Oasis’ ends the album with the most danceable four on the floor groove and the Wooden Flowers experimental melodies in the background. A perfect upbeat way to end this epic journey through their unique sound.
