The Digital Connection : How to approach a bootleg/stem remix + various production tips

Bootleg//Stem Remix Approach & Various Production Tips

I love to work on both original music as well as remixes. There is something very unique and special about the process for creating a remix track. I will explain my method for beginning a remix for both working with “stems” as well as creating a bootleg remix from a master WAV or MP3 file in Ableton Live.

Starting the remix can vary, typically for stem remixes the first thing i do is drop all the stems into the session and organize everything and make sure everything is set to the correct tempo. Then I will take the majority of the stems and gut them , usually i’ll take out most of the stems and focus on 3 or 4 main stem parts. For bootleg remixes instead of pulling the stems I will just pull the portion of the song I want to use in the remix and organize it into 4 or so different que points.
